Adding Spice to Team Building with Cooking Competitions

In today’s fast moving world where team members are often scattered all over the world or working in hybrid home and office situations, it is not always easy to gather team members together. Team building is more necessary than ever in situations like this to ensure that team members continue to foster collaboration and communication with each other. What better way to do it than through food.

Why Cooking Competitions?

It is a universal truth that the one commonality among humans is our love for food or the fact is that we all need sustenance to survive. A cooking competition as a culinary team building activity becomes the perfect way to spice things up and bring the team together. It involves them planning their menus to choosing the right ingredients, cooking and presenting their dishes to a panel of judges. It is the perfect formula for injecting fun, creativity and competitiveness.

Key Benefits:

Without a doubt, communication is a given as teams need to work together to coordinate their work flow in order to succeed.

Creative thinking and problem solving combined with a fun activity can lower stress levels in participants.

Nothing beats a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect when teams work together to cook something that touches everyone.

Planning Your Cooking Competition

Step 1: Choose a Theme

At Palate Sensations, we offer a slew of cooking related themes including popular cuisines from around the world, mystery box challenges, and murder mystery whodunit.

Step 2: Set the Ground Rules

Competitive based cooking themes will have time limits and rules and regulations surrounding deliverables and these should be clearly spelt out before the start of the cooking competition.

Step 3: Organise Teams

To maximise team bonding in Malaysia, we suggest to all our clients to organise the participants into teams where they can get maximum collaboration eg: those from different countries or work functions that would benefit by working together in person, should all be in one team. For some, it is all about diversity in skill level but whatever it is, make sure it encourages learning and collaboration.

Step 4: Arrange for Judges

Usually we use our chefs as judges but companies leaders are more than welcome to help us judge the cooking competition. All judging criterias are made clear to all team members before the start of the culinary team building activity.

So What Happens On the Big Day?

Cooking Area Setup

The chefs will set up each work station to ensure it is equipt with the necessary utensils and appliances. Depending on what theme is chosen, the ingredients will either be set up supermarket style or they are already on the individual work stations.

Kick-off Ceremony

We begin with a brief introduction and explanation of the rules including fire and safety regulations and then we are OFF and the countdown begins!

Monitoring the Process

The chefs will monitor the progress of the teams and cheer them on while offering assistance along the way.

Judging and Rewarding Participants

Judging Criteria

The judges will come up with a matrix to include taste, quality of the presentation, cleanliness, adherence to the theme and teamwork.

Awards and Prizes

The best part and what everyone is waiting for.. how did the teams fare? We celebrate the efforts of the participants by picking the best team based on criterias such as most creative presentation, adherence to the theme, best dish, best team spirit etc. We offer a small prize for the winning team. If companies want to bring their own prizes and expand the criterias, we are all for it.
